Changing Images of Heroines in Popular Prose Romances. Velmi utěšená a kratochvílná historie o krásné panně Mageloně (The Delightful and Entertaining Story of the Beutiful Maiden Maguelone). The Heroine of this Story from the Point of View of the Courtly Ideal.

Velmi utěšená a kratochvílná historie o krásné panně Mageloně, dceři krále z Neapolis, a o jednom rytíři jménem Petrovi, znamenitého hraběte z Provincí synu (The Delightful and Entertaining Story of the Beautiful Young Maiden Maguelone, Daughter of the King of Naples, and of a certain Knight called Peter, the Son of the Distinguished Count of Provence) printed anonymously in Olomouc in 1780, is one of those works into which literary science has hitherto scarcely ever inquired. It is nevertheless a text with a very long and complex genesis. We can follow its development from a medieval French tale of love, via a German adaptation to an early modern Czech popular prose romance. In the story of Maguelone, close attention is paid, as the very title suggests, to the main heroine, which is also a theme which in research into older Czech literature has been hitherto rather neglected. In the present thesis, we focus therefore on the analysis of this character. In particular, we try to show how the way she is portrayed is significantly influenced by the medieval conception of courtly literature, despite the fact that courtly epic literature is not otherwise particularly well documented in literature written in Czech and left no particularly rich tradition behind it. Kronika o Štylfrýdovi" and "Kronika o Bruncvíkovi" - Comparing knightly story and the book of native reading

This diploma thesis is going to focus on a comparison of a traditional knight´s short story and an early modern folk reading of the Chronicles of "Štifríd" and "Bruncvík"; the focus will be primarily on differences of the two texts. Narratives in Czech literature were repeatedly used in different time periods and in texts of various genres: from the allegorical knight's short story in the end of the 14th century to the early modern funny book of folk reading or even e.g. a folclore fairytale in the 19th century. The starting point for the work will be, therefore, an introduction of the interpretation attempts aimed at the filliation of handwritten and printed editions of the two narratives (Jaroslav Kolár's study), then an actual composition of the work (Hana Mirvaldová - Šmahelová's study) and also an allegorical presentation (Jaroslav Kolár's story). The main part of the thesis is an analysis of the handwritten releases from the turn of the 14th and 15th century and the printed edition from the 18th century, and their mutual comparison.

From Tom Thumb (Paleček) to Eulenspiegel or Prosopography in humanist entertainment prose

The thesis From Tom Thumb (Paleček) to Eulenspiegel or Prosopography in humanist entertainment prose is an analysis of main literary characters of selected Czech books of folk reading. Opening part is dedicated to the Renaissance and Renaissance culture in general. The periodization and brief characteristic of Czech humanist literature from the years between the half of the 15th century and the 1620?s is mentioned further. The thesis gives more detailed look at entertainment prose and primarily discusses books of folk literature which were integral part of Czech verbal culture. The analytic part is focused on prosopography in several books of folk reading ? Eulenspiegel, Tom Thumb (Paleček), Franta?s Law and Doctor Faust. The aim is to describe main characters, capture their artistic depiction and foremost to assess their moral code.

Fairy-tales motives in book of common reading

The aim of this work is extension of knowledge about books of common reading focused on fairy-taleish motives. This work describes their basic features but its also brings other knowledge and looks for new connections. On choice of books of common reading is the attention situated on rise of work and events which went with them. This work is engaged in general look at these books and other literature determined for a broader audience. Its focused on quantity of printing and publication´s places of books of common reading. The attention is paid to typical heros such as Ezop, Paleček or Enšpígl and another popular motives (Faust, Fortunat). Part of the work is also treatise of theory of fairy-tales including the basic terms and conception of fairy-taleish motifs. The theoretical fairy-taleish data are completed by general and also practical opinion. The essential points of work are characteristics of each book and their fairy-taleish motives. In the last part is the attention focused on motives which appear not only in books of common reading but also in other types of art such as motive of the devil in the modern art or in the traditional literature.
